Brock Turner Has Registered As A Sex Offender, This Is How It Will Affect His Life

After his early release from prison on account of good behaviour, convicted sexual assailant and former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner has garnered a fair share of controversy.

A prosecutor, backed by most of the general public, said that Turner should have faced at least six years in prison - on account of his lack of remorse, and the extremely vulnerable position his unconscious victim was in.

Turner was convicted of assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person.

In spite of this, Judge Aaroon Pesky sentenced him to just six months in prison, and he only had to serve three of them. Locals in his neighbourhood have been protesting, and using chalk to write the word ‘rapist’ on the road outside his parents’ home in Ohio.

On Tuesday morning he officially registered as a sex offender with his local police sheriff. This is how being on the Sex Offenders Register will affect him:

1. He will be registered as a sex offender for the entirety of his life.
Unless he manages to successfully appeal (which is extremely unlikely), he will always have to abide by the rules of the Sex Offenders Registry.

2. He is banned from living with 1,000 feet of a school or park.
And he must make the Police aware of his address, number plates and other personal information regularly.

3. Anyone living within 1,250 feet of him will receive a written notice.
His neighbours will receive a postcard, explaining that a registered sex offender lives nearby - and will include a picture of him, his address and other information.

4.He has to undergo 3 years of probation, in which he must attend mandatory group counselling sessions and polygraph tests.
He is required to attend a sex offender management program, which normally includes regular group counseling sessions discussing the culture and behaviour that leads to sexual assault. He will also, allegedly, have to take polygraph tests.

And because of the large role alcohol had in his offence, drug and alcohol counseling is part of his probation - this will include random testing.

He has to check in with his probation officer at least once a week, either in person or over the phone.

5. He will never be allowed to own or buy firearms.
Under the terms of his sentencing, Turner is banned from owning guns or ammunition.

6. He’s not allowed to leave the state of Ohio without written permission from the authorities.
Not even just for a day long vacation.

7. He cannot move house without permission, and the police will pop in unannounced every few months to check he is still living at his registered address.
He will have to apply for the right to move out of his parents’ house in Ohio.

His sentence may have been unreasonably short, but being on the sex offenders resister will affect him for the rest of his life. Any job he gets will be informed of his status of a sex offender, his home will always be monitored and his education may be affected.

Let’s not forget that his name and face are known (and despised) all over the world. It’s not the judicial victory most of us hoped for, but it’s a small victory nonetheless.
