Campaign Launched To Punish Man Arrested For Burying His Dog Alive

A man has been arrested after his dog was found buried alive, weighed down with lead and stones and seemingly left to die.

The French mastiff was discovered on Saturday by another man who was walking his dog on waste ground west of Paris.

The man, who said that only her head was visible when he found her, called the emergency services and set about trying to free the animal. That was no easy task though, as the poor dog was surrounded by stones and attached to a sack of gravel put in place to prevent her from breaking free from the earth.

Police have arrested the dog’s 21-year-old owner, who insists it wasn’t him who buried the dog, claiming that the dog ran away.

Investigators aren’t convinced, a source has been quoted as saying: “The dog is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis. It’s difficult to imagine her running away.”

The owner will face trial for animal cruelty, which could mean two years in prison and a fine of up to €30,000 (£21,000).

An online petition demanding that the owner is given the maximum sentence if found guilty has already received over 300,000 signatures.

This kind of cruelty really beggars belief. Thankfully, the dog survived.
