We Finally Know What The Avatar Sequels Are Going To Be About… Sort Of
You may not have liked it but Avatar was and still is the highest grossing film of all time. That’s all well and good to have under your belt but, when you’ve promised four sequels, how do you live up to that EVERY SINGLE TIME?
James Cameron, the man behind the film that is essentially Pocahontas… but blue, spoke about his plans for the franchise when he was promoting Toruk, the Cirque De Soleil prequel to Avatar. He wants it to be more of a family saga:
“The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.”
If you’re anything like me, you’re confused because all of the humans were booted off Pandora at the end of Avatar but that’ll all be explained, right..? Right?!
Cameron also wants to expand the Avatar universe which makes sense seeing as watching his film was compared to watching the likes of Star Wars for the first time. He said he wants to:
“branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system”
He also wants it to pioneer the use of higher frame rates like 48 and 60 per second. The first instalment of the franchise was notorious for using groundbreaking visual and filming technologies so Cameron wants to continue that trend:
“The 3D shows you a window into reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window. In fact, it is just reality. It is really stunning.”
Also, if you’re a fan of the run-of-the-mill villain covered in ominous scars, you’ll be delighted to know that the presumed dead Stephen Lang is returning… we just don’t know how yet:
“I’m not going to say exactly how we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend”
And, if like me, you were annoyed when you went to see the first Hobbit film, not only because it was sub-par, but because it just sort of ended and you were forced to wait another year to see what happened next, fear not, as each Avatar film’s plot will be self-contained.
“I’m writing it as separate stories that have an overall arc inclusive of the first film. I don’t want to suffer from the Matrix 2 problem, where it just ends, like, what the hell? It’s gotta end. There’s gotta be a sense of conclusion, but also a sense that the journey will continue, and that’s a fine line”
Well he’s definitely experienced in making brilliantly-received sequels so maybe he pull this next lot off?
