This Morning’s “Cruel” Bake Off Prank Has Not Gone Down Well With Viewers
A couple of days ago, it was announced that Bake Off would be leaving the BBC.
The beloved and oh-so-British baking competition has been bought by Channel 4, who bid three times what the BBC were willing (or even able) to pay to keep it.
This sent internet baking-enthusiasts into overdrive, as numerous jokes were made about “Bake Off Tent, this is Davina, you are live on Channel 4, please do not swear”, or, even better:
Can't wait for Naked Celebrity Bake Off Benefits Island on #Channel4

Now that, we’d watch.
Shortly after we discovered that Bake Off was moving to Channel 4, we learnt that Mel and Sue - the presenters - wouldn’t be going with it. In a joint statement, they wrote that they weren’t tempted by Channel 4’s “dough”, and were bowing out.
This prompted This Morning to tweet this:
Who will be the new presenters of the GBBO? Official announcement on 'This Morning' at 10:30am. pic.twitter.com/B8WZ85XCpZ

Excitedly, legions of Bake Off fans tuned in to find out who would be filling Mel and Sue’s shoes, but they were to be left bitterly disappointed.
Instead of revealing Bake Off’s next hosts, Phil and Holly simply announced that it wasn’t going to be them.
People were not impressed:
Rare misjudged "joke" by Pip and Holly there. Lots of #GBBO fans would've tuned into #ThisMorning especially. Grrrrr

Tomorrow: This Morning claims to have resurrected Alan Rickman, only to eventually unveil Schofield tittering in a Snape wig

This is serious stuff. Now is not the time for messing around with the #GBBO fans, we are vulnerable, hurting. https://t.co/0gtcdhGyfX

So @thismorning Official announcement was just to say that Holly & Phil weren’t doing it. Bad taste ITV! #GBBO

PLAYED BY #THISMORNING. SUEING FOR CRUELTY.

(To be honest, we should have been at least a little bit sceptical. For Channel 4 to have chosen new presenters, been through pay negotiations with them, and then been ready to announce them (on an ITV show no less), in less than 24 hours… Well that would be quite a triumph).
Will you watch Bake Off once it’s moved to Channel 4? And who would you like to see presenting it? Let us know in the comments!
