Mel And Sue Have Quit ‘Bake Off’
Following the news that Bake Off has been bought by Channel Four, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have announced that they will step down as the show’s hosts.
That means that this season (the last to broadcast on the BBC) will also be their last.
Earlier today, Sue Perkins prompted speculation that she intended to step down, retweeting the BBC’s statement on losing Bake Off (in which they said that they were disappointed, and that they were hoping Love Productions would change its mind), and this afternoon, a spokesperson for both presenters has confirmed that they will not be making the move to Channel Four.
In a joint statement, they said:
“We were very shocked and saddened to learn yesterday evening that Bake Off will be moving from its home.
We made no secret of our desire for the show to remain where it was.”
Neither Mary Berry nor Paul Hollywood has spoken out on the move, but given that they had both previously expressed a desire for Bake Off to stay on the BBC, they could well decide to quit alongside Sue and Mel.
Channel Four outbid the BBC for Bake Off, and will be paying £75 million for three seasons.
Who’ll replace Sue and Mel as presenters will remain to be seen, but the show definitely won’t be the same without them (and their pitch perfect innuendos).
