Making A Murderer’s Brendan Dassey Might Not Get Released After All

Whatever your opinion on Steven Avery, the majority of the people that watched Making a Murderer believe that Brendan Dassey had nothing to do with Teresa Halback’s murder.

The then 16-year-old was interrogated by police without a lawyer or a parent present, and it seems that he was manipulated and tricked into making a false confession.

This August, a federal magistrate judge - agreeing that Dassey was innocent, and that his confession was “involuntary” - overturned his conviction, and ordered his release from prison (so far, Brendan has served almost 10 years of a life sentence).

But, it’s not time for Dassey to celebrate just yet. Yesterday, Attorney General Brad Schimel announced his decision to appeal the ruling:

“We believe the magistrate judge’s decision that Brendan Dassey’s confession was coerced by investigators, and that no reasonable court could have concluded otherwise, is wrong on the facts and wrong on the law.

Two state courts carefully examined the evidence and properly concluded that Brendan Dassey’s confession to sexually assaulting and murdering Teresa Halbach with his uncle, Steven Avery, was voluntary, and the investigators did not use constitutionally impermissible tactics.”

The now 26-year-old Brendan will have to stay behind bars until the outcome of the appeal is decided.

Making a Murderer season two has been announced by Netflix, and it’s likely that Brendan’s struggle for freedom will feature.
