Katy Perry And Orlando Survivor End Up In Tears On Ellen
After he was injured in the Pulse Massacre - that claimed 49 lives in June - Tony Marrero found comfort in music.
Speaking on The Ellen Show, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter employee (who was shot four times in the back and once in the arm), explained that while he was recovering, he listened to Katy Perry’s single Rise on repeat.
He found the lyrics inspiring, and they helped him get through what must have been an unspeakably difficult time.
In light of this, Ellen invited Katy Perry to come and surprise Tony during his interview. And surprised he definitely was… You can see what happened next here:
Both crying, Tony and Katy embraced, and Tony thanked Katy for “everything you do”.
“Your lyrics to [“Rise”] helped me from the day I was in the hospital all the way until now. You’re amazing.”
She replied saying, “life isn’t easy and you need little reliefs, through songs, quite possibly. I’m happy to be a joy, I’m happy to be a light and I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you.”
Katy then explained that she had been told that Tony was a creative, and that she knew he wanted to go to film school, so she offered to personally pay for his first year of tuition.
It’s an incredible gesture for a man who went through something unspeakable.
