Ambulances Called To Cannibal Horror Film Screening Because People Keep Passing Out

Every now and then, you hear that, at a small independent film festival, one film is so terrifying or so sickening that people pass out, throw up, do both or do something else of a similar calibre.

Poking its head out of the Toronto Film Festival is a story of a similar, yet heightened exponentially, ilk. A film coming from French Director, Julia Ducournau, has been making headlines as it’s been pushing viewers over the edge… big time.

Raw is said film and involves “a shy, vegetarian student at a veterinary college [who] develops an insatiable lust for flesh as the result of a gruesome hazing ritual”.

The reason it’s been causing a stir is that, after several viewings, paramedics had to be dispatched to attend to cinema-goers who had passed out as a result of watching the film.

An ambulance had to be called to the scene as the film became too much for a couple patrons,”

- Ryan Werner, who handles the film’s marketing and was present at the screening.

Credit where it’s due, though. As reports have it, the next screening of Raw was jam packed and, along with that, had a whole plethora agents and managers attending as Julia Ducournau is currently unsigned.

I’ve always found horror films a weird concept. It just seems inherently odd that you’d want to pay to be scared out of your mind whilst there’s a nice, funny comedy going on next door. What seems especially weird is that certain people had decided to go and watch Raw when they clearly didn’t have it in them. Presumably, it wasn’t the first sight of gore that set them off so you’d think that, once you were initially made uncomfortable at, say, 10 minutes in, you’d leave before having to watch the next 90..?

Raw will next screen at Fantastic Fest, followed by Mayhem Film Festival, Celluloid Screams, Beyond Fest and the Sitges Film Festival.

Will you be watching it? Let us know in the comments!
