Awkward Moment On ‘First Dates’ Sparks Furious Twitter Row Over Who Should Pay
A middle-aged couple on this week’s First Dates ran into a little trouble when it came down to who was going to pay for the meal.
When the waitress asked if they were going to split the bill, Brian replied that they were. And this didn’t impress Mary, his date. Sitting in stony-faced silent, she later told the cameras that she hadn’t been impressed.
“Not to offer and say I’ll pay, and then wait for me to say we’ll go halves… I was absolutely fuming. Fuming.”
She later said, in front of poor old Brian:
“Well, I thought Brian was very nice but, umm, I think you should have offered to pay the bill.”
He replied by saying that he thought, when you don’t know someone very well, it’s always best to just split it, to which Mary replied, “that was a big no-no for me.”.
You can watch the awkward moment here:
Well, just as the issue divided Brian and Mary, it divided us viewers watching at home. Whether or not the man should offer to pay has sparked a fiery Twitter debate, with a whole lot of people weighing in with their opinions:
You see how angry that woman got when she had to pay half the bill on #FirstDates? Equality feels like oppression to the privileged. . .

@Alimac1993 @GenesisElijah If a guy asks me out & doesn't offer to pay, I assume he's not interested. If I'm not interested, insist on split

#firstdates is different. The guy's not actually asked the woman for a date but if he fancies her, they usually pay.#thismorning

Oh wow. It's a bit snobby of Mary to assume her date was going to pay for the whole meal. I'm pleased she did have to pay! #firstdates

I'll always pay the bill on a date, & refuse a woman who offers to pay half UNLESS she is adamant she pays. It's gentlemanly. #FirstDates

In recent times some women want to be independent, financially & romantically, and will demand to pay half on dates. Fair play🙌🏼 #FirstDates

Women who expect the man to pay for the date, but have no interest in them/going on another one, are pretty classless and nasty. #FirstDates

"I have never been on a date where I've actually had to pay for my own meal, fuming"😱

I'm with Mary on this one! If a guy doesn't pay on the first date, he's definitely not getting a second. No no! ✋🏻 @FirstDates #firstdates
