Steven Spielberg Is Remaking West Side Story
Prolific film director Steven Spielberg is reportedly going to remake West Side Story - the beloved Broadway musical that first got a big screen adaptation back in 1961.
While Steven has had the rights to West Side Story for 15 years, and has reportedly wanted to shoot a remake for “decades”, the project is only now moving ahead.
A script is currently being written (by Tony Kushner, who wrote Lincoln) and - once it’s ready to go - the film will be a co-production between Fox and MGM.
Spielberg has never directed a musical before, and it’s unknown whether he’s planning on keeping the songs in West Side Story, or leaving them out.
The story - based on Romeo and Juliet - is set in New York, and sees Tony and Maria (from rival gangs the White Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks) fall in love.
