Captive SeaWorld Killer Whale Lies Motionless And “Suicidal” During Show
The phasing out of SeaWorld’s cruel orca shows by 2018 at their water parks couldn’t come soon enough.
The 2013 documentary Black Fish highlighted the issues surrounding SeaWorld’s orca programme via Netflix’s massive audience, and since then a lot has changed. After a massive backlash from animal right’s activists and shocked Netflix users alike, the company have started to clean up their act, changing from an entertainment to a “conservation” brand, stating that they’ll end all live orca shows and breeding programmes.
But two years is a long time to wait for the whales in captivity, forced to perform three times a day. Especially for orca Morgan, currently in Seaworld’s Loro Parque in Tenerife. Morgan was found emaciated near the Netherlands in 2010, and taken to a dolphinarium to recover. But instead of being released into the wild, as was promised, she was shipped off to Tenerife to perform at the SeaWorld park, where she’s been kept ever since.
A few weeks ago, she was reportedly seen banging her head repeatedly against mental bars and this weekend, tourists filmed the below footage of the whale beaching herself and then laying practically motionless after her performance:
You can sign the petition to free Morgan, and potentially reintroduce her to her family here.
Have you been to SeaWorld? Did you think the animal’s were treated fairly? Let us know in the comments.
