More People Have Died From Selfies Than Shark Attacks This Year
The great white shark, nemesis of every good horror movie, is now being usurped by… the selfie?
Sharks have long been misunderstood when it comes to being recognised as scary killing machines, and they don’t cause anywhere near as much trouble as is widely believed. But to think selfies are causing more deaths, madness.
It would appear that getting the perfect selfie is so distracting that occasionally people lose focus, and consequently their lives. The most recent example is a 66-year-old Japanese tourist who died after falling down the stairs at the Taj Mahal while attempting to take the photo.
That raises the selfie death toll for 2015 to 12, whereas sharks have only been responsible for eight.

Four of the selfie deaths this year have come as a consequence of someone falling. The next leading cause of selfie-inflicted deaths was being hit by a train.
It gives rise to the theory that more tourists are putting themselves at risk to get the perfect photo, some call it the ‘daredevil’ selfie.
It’s the danger that selfie sticks may cause in densely populated places that has led to many large public places and festivals banning them. That, and it can ruin the vibe a bit.
So, remember, your pictures may look great but they aren’t worth your life. Be careful!
